AUGUST 24
Dream up the world's most wonderful waffle and give it a fun alliterative name!
This Day Explores:
I believe some of the best learning begins with a simple question: What can we celebrate today?
Each National Day Learning Adventure is designed to help families turn an ordinary day into an invitation to Read, Write, Play, and Explore together. You might discover a new book, imagine an unexpected story, try a simple family activity, or follow a spark of curiosity into history, science, geography, art, or nature.
Every Learning Adventure is a little different. You might read the featured book together, try the writing prompt, answer a delightfully silly Would You Rather question, or enjoy the family activity.
Then follow whatever sparks your child’s curiosity. Spend a few minutes with one Adventure Trail, explore all three, or let one unexpected question lead you somewhere completely new.
There is no single “right” way to use a Learning Adventure. Choose the pieces that fit your family and your day.
Adventure Trails are short invitations to keep exploring. Each one opens a new door into a topic such as history, science, geography, art, nature, literature, or culture.
Whenever it is helpful, we include links to trusted educational sources or videos we have previewed to give curious kids a place to begin. You do not have to follow every trail. Choose the one that catches your child’s attention and see where curiosity leads.
π A note for grown-ups: We review linked resources before sharing them, but websites and online content can change over time. We encourage parents and teachers to preview resources and provide the level of supervision that is right for their child.
Not at all! Use the calendar for inspiration, or simply follow your child’s interests. Every Learning Adventure can be enjoyed whenever it fits your family.
A child fascinated by sharks, castles, pumpkins, space, or waffles does not need to wait for the calendar to catch up.
Every Learning Adventure is built around three core experiences: a featured book, a creative writing prompt, and a family activity. From there, the adventure can branch into science, history, geography, art, nature, STEM, culture, food, and more.
You’ll also find little learning opportunities tucked throughout the pages. A country flag might introduce a new place, a map might inspire a geography question, or a surprising fact might open the door to history, science, art, language, or culture. These details are intentionally woven into the adventures so children can discover something new without every discovery becoming a lesson.
Even our Would You Rather questions are designed to do more than make kids laugh or choose a favorite. They often introduce a surprising fact, place, tradition, or idea in a playful way that makes children want to know more.
Across the full collection, our goal is to expose children to an incredible variety of books and authors, writing styles, language and literary devices, historical figures, cultures, scientific ideas, places around the world, and questions worth exploring.
Use as much or as little as you need. A writing prompt can become language arts. The featured book can become read-aloud time. An Adventure Trail might lead naturally into science, history, geography, or art.
Or simply choose one small part as a joyful break in your regular routine. Learning Adventures are meant to add curiosity and connection to your day, not more pressure.
Definitely not. Think of each page as a collection of possibilities rather than a checklist.
Read the book today and save the writing prompt for tomorrow. Try the family activity and skip everything else. Follow one Adventure Trail because it sparks an unexpected interest. The best adventure is the one that works for your family.
Learning is even more fun when we share what we discover! Many adventures end with a simple discussion question that kids and grown-ups can answer together.
Share a favorite, tell us about a family tradition, answer a silly question, or add something interesting you discovered along the way. Then peek at the other responses and see how families everywhere are celebrating and learning together.
There are no right answers. The Discussion is simply a place to keep the conversation going and help our community learn from one another.
Almost every Learning Adventure includes a Printable Snapshot, a mini lesson plan that brings the key parts of the day together in one convenient, printer-friendly page.
Print it for your morning basket, add it to your homeschool binder, or keep it nearby as you move through the adventure. Use the whole plan, choose just a few pieces, or save it for whenever the topic sparks your child’s interest.
And if you happen to find one without a Snapshot, consider it one of our wonderfully unscripted adventures!
