National Violin Day celebrates one of the most recognizable instruments in the string family. A violin can whisper, dance, cry, race, or soar, and musicians use it in everything from cusicians use it in everything from classical concertos and folk music to jazz, film scores, and contemporary performances. Todayโs Learning Adventure follows those sounds into storytelling, centuries-old violin making, the science of vibration, and violins around the world.
A violin can sound surprisingly like a human voice. Scientists have even found voice-like โvowelโ patterns in famous old Italian violins!

Long before Itzhak Perlman became one of the world’s most celebrated violinists, he was a boy who fell in love with the sound of the violin coming from his family’s radio. This beautifully illustrated biography follows his determination to keep making music through enormous challenges and gives young readers the chance to meet the person behind the remarkable performances.
Start by noticing what the music seems to be doing. Is it racing, floating, bouncing, creeping, soaring, trembling, or marching?
Maybe someone is racing to catch a train, wandering through falling snow, entering a mysterious castle, celebrating at a festival, or doing something completely different.
Ask yourself: Where could this music belong? Who is there? What is happening?

Pick your favorite of todayโs violin tracks and turn the living room into a concert hall. Grab an imaginary violin and bow, announce your performer, and give the most dramatic performance you can. No musical talent required.

A traditional violin is carefully crafted from several kinds of wood: spruce is often used for the top, maple for the back, sides, and neck, and ebony for the fingerboard. Even the bow has a surprising natural ingredient: about 160โ180 strands of horsehair! Cremona, Italy became famous for master violin makers such as Amati, Guarneri, and Stradivari.
Wonder Challenge:
Find Cremona on a map, then look at photographs of several historic violins. What details do you notice that make each one unique?
When a violinist draws a bow across a string, friction makes the string vibrate. Those vibrations travel through the violin’s wooden body, which helps turn a tiny vibrating string into a sound that can fill a room.

Gently pluck a stretched rubber band. What changes when you make it tighter, looser, shorter, or longer?
The violin has found a home in musical traditions around the world. Norway’s beautifully decorated Hardanger fiddle has extra strings beneath the main strings that vibrate along with the music. Violins also play an important role in South Indian Carnatic music and in Mexican mariachi ensembles.
Wonder Challenge:
Look closely at a Hardanger fiddle, then listen to violin music from another country. What looks or sounds different from the violin music you already know?

One performance I especially wanted to share is Itzhak Perlman (the subject of today’s book pick!) playing Bachโs Chaconne from Partita No. 2 in D Minor. Written around 1720, this extraordinary movement is considered one of the great achievements of solo violin music. Bach somehow creates the feeling of an entire musical world with one violin.
1720 was also the year Bachโs wife, Maria Barbara, died unexpectedly. Some have wondered whether that loss shaped the Chaconne, though we simply donโt know. I think knowing that history makes an already powerful piece even more moving.
