World Pasta Day celebrates one of the world's most familiar foods. Every October 25, pasta lovers around the globe celebrate the many shapes, recipes, and traditions that have made pasta a favorite in kitchens around the world.

A pasta company needs your big idea: invent a brand-new pasta shape!What does it look like? Does it twist, curl, scoop, spiral, or wobble? Give your pasta a memorable name, describe its design, and persuade the company that families everywhere will want a box in their pantry.

Need ideas?

Think about the pasta already in your kitchen. Some noodles have tubes, ridges, pockets, curls, or tiny spaces where sauce can hide. Would your invention scoop up chunky tomato sauce, trap gooey cheese, float perfectly in soup, or twirl around a fork? Give it a name that’s just as creative as its shape!

Bonus: Add a slogan for the box.

Pasta Aisle Adventure

Take a quick trip to the grocery store and spend a few minutes exploring the pasta aisle together. Look for shapes your family has never tried before and see how many different kinds you can find.

As you browse, notice:

🍝 Which shapes are longest, tiniest, twistiest, or most unusual?
🔎 What clues do the pasta names give you?
🌾 Are the noodles made from wheat, lentils, chickpeas, rice, or something else?
🌍 Can you find a pasta that was made in another country?
💰 How do the prices compare?

Choose one or two unfamiliar shapes to bring home, then cook them with a favorite sauce. Which pasta holds the sauce best… and which one earns a place at your family’s table?

Language & Culture Trail: What’s in a Pasta Name?

Many Italian pasta names describe what the noodles resemble. Farfalle means “butterflies,” orecchiette means “little ears,” and vermicelli means “little worms.” Even familiar pasta names can hold clues to their shape!

Wonder Challenge:
Search for the meaning behind the name of one pasta shape in your pantry. What object, animal, or shape was it named after? Need some ideas? Check out this infographic of over 180 different pasta shapes.

History Trail: Before Marco Polo

You may have heard that Marco Polo brought pasta to Italy from China, but people in Italy were eating forms of pasta long before his famous travels. Sicily had an important dried-pasta tradition centuries earlier, making pasta’s real history much more interesting than the familiar legend.

Wonder Challenge:
Look up the Marco Polo pasta story. What evidence can you find that pasta was already being eaten in Italy before he returned from Asia?

Geography Trail: Pasta Travels the World

Italy may be famous for pasta, but cultures around the world have made it their own. Discover Japan’s Napolitan spaghetti, sweet Filipino-style spaghetti, and some of the many pasta dishes (like Macaroni & Cheese!) enjoyed in the United States.

Wonder Challenge:
Find Italy 🇮🇹, Japan 🇯🇵, the Philippines 🇵🇭, and the United States 🇺🇸 on a globe or map. How has each country taken pasta in a different direction?
