This hilarious read-aloud grows sillier with every page as one ridiculous description stacks on top of the next. The playful rhymes and cumulative storytelling make it the perfect inspiration for creating your own wonderfully absurd adventure.
Maybe your creature is a three-legged chicken wearing roller skates… carrying a pineapple… while singing opera… on the back of a sleepy giraffe!
Sit in a circle and have one person begin with a simple sentence like, “A duck walked into a bakery.” Each player adds one new silly detail before passing the story to the next person.
By the end, you might have a banana-legged duck wearing scuba gear, balancing pancakes on its head while teaching penguins to tap dance! The goal isn’t to make sense… it’s to make everyone laugh.
Every adventure has another path to follow. Choose a trail and see where your curiosity leads!
Not every poem needs matching sounds at the ends of its lines. Free verse poetry can use rhythm, vivid images, repetition, and interesting line breaks instead of a rhyme scheme.
Wonder Challenge:
Find a short free verse poem and read it aloud. If the lines don’t rhyme, what makes it feel like poetry? Listen for repetition, rhythm, strong images, or words that sound especially interesting together.
Some words look as though they should rhyme because their endings are spelled alikeโbut sound completely different when spoken. These are called eye rhymes.
Wonder Challenge:
Try saying these pairs aloud: love / move, food / blood, and daughter / laughter. They look like rhymes on the page, but do they sound like rhymes to your ears? Can you find another pair?
The expression โno rhyme or reasonโ has been used for centuries to describe something that doesn’t seem to make any sense.
