Look at a map from The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings. Which geographical features make the journey more difficult or help determine where the characters can travel?
Long before many of his stories were finished, J.R.R. Tolkien was inventing languages. His fascination with words, names, alphabets, and the history of language became part of the foundation of Middle-earth.
Wonder Challenge:
Choose a few names from Middle-earth, such as Bilbo, Gandalf, Smaug, Rivendell, Mirkwood, or Bag End, and look up where the names came from or what they mean. What clues can a character or place name give you about Tolkien’s imaginary world?
Tolkien didn’t only write about Middle-earth. He drew and painted it, too. His illustrations, maps, lettering, and stories developed together as different parts of the same imaginary world.
