Exclamation Mark

by Amy Krouse Rosenthal

This clever picture book brings punctuation to life by turning an exclamation mark into a character searching for where he belongs. It’s funny, memorable, and a wonderful reminder that even the smallest punctuation mark can make a big difference.

One morning, every punctuation mark disappears from the world... What happens when nobody knows whether a sentence is a question, an exciting announcement, or just a regular statement?

The Missing Punctuation Mystery

Look at these sentences with no punctuation:

  • We had chocolate bacon and fruit for lunch. (Wait… what’s chocolate bacon?!)
  • I love baking my friends and family. (Yikes! A comma would really help!)
  • Lets eat Grandma! (Poor Grandma!)

Without punctuation, everyday conversations could become confusing, funny, or even disastrous! How would your characters solve the mystery and bring punctuation back to the world?

Punctuation Performance

Write the same sentence on several index cards, changing only the punctuation.

For example:

  • We found the cat.
  • We found the cat!
  • We found the cat?
  • We found… the cat.
  • You ate all the cookies.
  • You ate all the cookies!
  • You ate all the cookies?
  • You ateโ€ฆ all the cookies.

Take turns reading each sentence aloud and see how the punctuation completely changes its meaning, emotion, and tone.
