MEET LAELA

So glad you’re here.

I’m a homeschool mom, certified writing tutor, lifelong learner, and enthusiastic follower of rabbit trails.

I created Dress Up Your Writing because I believe learning doesn’t always have to begin with a lesson plan. Sometimes it begins with a waffle. Or a shark tooth. Or a really good book. Or a question nobody expected to ask.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SITE

Writing has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. My mom loved poetry and filled our home with words; she was reading Byron and Frost to me when I was tiny, and writing together was simply part of growing up.

That early love of language stayed with me. Years later, while teaching strong verbs, I created the Verb Replacer to give students an easy way to experiment with better word choices. Next came the Adjective Makeover, followed by the Word Spark Tool (inspired by my mom, and her daily journaling habit) and eventually Grammar Bot and Rhyme & Shine.

But the more I taught, read aloud, homeschooled, and explored alongside my own children, the more I noticed something: the learning that stuck with us rarely stayed neatly inside one subject.

A visit to the sunflower patch led us to Fibonacci numbers. Learning the states and capitals ended with Kentucky Hot Brown sandwiches for dinner. Dad filling the tractor trailer with diesel fuel sparked a lesson about Rudolf Diesel. Even a picnic sent us wondering about the phrase al fresco and the paintings that gave it meaning.

That curiosity eventually grew into our Learning Adventures… a way for families to Read, Write, Play, and Explore together, following one ordinary topic wherever it happens to lead.

Books & Bites grew from another simple idea, shared with me by a fellow homeschool mom: when you want to engage kids, add food. She was right! Pairing a great book with a story-inspired snack and fun extensions can turn an ordinary read-aloud into an experience kids remember… and give families one more joyful reason to gather around a good book together.

FOLLOW THE RABBIT TRAILS

I believe some of the best learning begins with a simple question:

What can we celebrate today?

For example, National Waffle Day might begin with a favorite book and a writing idea, then lead to the science of leavening agents, the history of patents, and a trip across the map to Belgium.

That’s the kind of learning I love… the kind where one discovery leads naturally to another, and suddenly you’re following a rabbit trail you never planned to take.

You never have to do everything on a Learning Adventure page. Choose the part that catches your family’s attention that day and see where curiosity leads.

The learning behind the learning

I’m a homeschool mom, certified writing tutor, and lifelong learner with a background in early childhood development.

Much of my work has centered on helping children become more confident writers while protecting the imagination and curiosity that make their ideas worth sharing in the first place.

Over the years, tutoring and homeschooling have only strengthened my belief that meaningful learning doesn’t have to feel rigid or disconnected. Children can build real skills while reading wonderful books, asking big questions, noticing the world around them, and enjoying the process.

WHAT I BELIEVE

Learning can be joyful and meaningful at the same time.

The goal isn’t to create more schoolwork. It’s to make room for curiosity, conversation, connection, and the kind of learning children remember because they enjoyed discovering it together.

Some days, a Learning Adventure may become an afternoon of books, writing, research, and family conversation. Other days, you may read one fun fact, answer one question, and move on.

Both count.

What matters most is making space for children to notice something, wonder about it, and discover that learning can happen almost anywhere.
