You're opening a brand-new pizzeria, and your first challenge is to create a signature pizza that customers simply can't resist!

Invent Your Pizza

Give it a memorable name, and write a short, persuasive menu description that makes people want to order it. Describe the toppings, crust, and flavors, and include at least one convincing reason your pizza deserves a spot on everyone’s dinner table.

Need Ideas?
Would your pizza have a crispy, golden crust or thick, fluffy edges? Are the toppings familiar favorites or something completely unexpected? Think about the words restaurants use to make food sound delicious. Instead of saying “Our pizza has cheese,” you might describe “a bubbling blanket of melted mozzarella.” You can even add a catchy slogan or make a bold claim about why your pizza is the best in town!

Build-Your-Own Pizza Night

Turn your kitchen into a family pizzeria! Start with homemade dough, a store-bought crust, or even individual naan or pita breads. Set out sauce, shredded cheese, and a few favorite toppings, then let everyone create their own signature pizza.

Before the pizzas go into the oven, have each family member give their creation an official menu name.

Sneak in a little pizza math:

  • Measure ingredients using cups, halves, and quarters.

  • Divide a pizza into four or eight equal slices and name the fractions.

  • Give different sections different toppings. Can you make a pizza that’s 1/2 cheese, 1/4 pepperoni, and 1/4 vegetables?

  • For older kids, double or halve a dough recipe to practice converting measurements.

If you make yeast dough, take a quick peek at it before and after rising. That puffiness is a clue to the science happening inside!

Travel Trail: A Slice of Italy

Pizza as we know it has strong roots in Naples, a coastal city in southern Italy near Mount Vesuvius. Find Naples on a map, then discover how traditional Neapolitan pizza is made. Watch master pizza-makers at work through UNESCO’s look at Neapolitan pizza-making.

Wonder Challenge: Find Naples on a map of Italy. What famous volcano overlooks the city, and why do people still live nearby?

Science Trail: The Secret of Rising Dough

Ever wonder why pizza dough puffs up? Yeast is a living microorganism that feeds on sugars and releases carbon dioxide gas, creating tiny bubbles inside the dough. Explore the science with the Exploratorium’s yeast balloon experiment.

Wonder Challenge: Watch how yeast can inflate a balloon. How is this similar to what happens inside rising pizza dough?

Math Trail: A Fraction of the Fun

Pizza makes fractions deliciously easy to picture! Halves, quarters, and eighths all represent parts of a whole, but what happens when you change the number of slices? Explore The Math Learning Center’s interactive Fractions tool to investigate.

Wonder Challenge: Divide a circle into eight equal slices. Can you find two different ways to represent exactly half of the pizza?
