โค๏ธ Why We Celebrate

National Pumpkin Day celebrates one of autumnโ€™s most recognizable fruits. Pumpkins can become pies, soups, decorations, works of art, enormous fair-winning giants, and, of course, glowing jack-oโ€™-lanterns.

๐Ÿ’ก Did You Know?

Think all pumpkins are orange and round? The Dickinson variety traditionally used for canned pumpkin is shaped more like a butternut squash!

How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin?

by Margaret McNamara

How many seeds could possibly be hiding inside one pumpkin? This autumn classroom story turns a simple question into an opportunity to estimate, count, compare, and make a few surprising discoveries.

This title pairs naturally with todayโ€™s hands-on pumpkin investigation while quietly weaving math into the celebration too!

Write

โœ๏ธ
Imagine a pumpkin unlike any pumpkin youโ€™ve ever seen.Maybe itโ€™s covered in polka dots. Maybe itโ€™s as tiny as a marble or as big as your house. Perhaps it has swirls of unexpected color, sprouts curly purple vines, or has a tiny secret door hidden in its side. Now describe your unusual pumpkin as vividly as you can.

Need ideas?

Zoom in on the details. Are the polka dots perfectly round or splattered across the skin? Does the pumpkin glow, shimmer, sparkle, or change colors? Is its stem twisted like a corkscrew? Is the surface smooth, prickly, fuzzy, wrinkled, or covered in swirling patterns?

Challenge: Describe your pumpkin so clearly that someone else could draw it from your words alone.

Pumpkin Investigation

Before you carve or cook a pumpkin, turn it into a family mystery!

Choose a pumpkin and make a few predictions before cutting it open:

  • How much does it weigh?
  • How big is it around?
  • Will it float or sink?
  • How many seeds do you think are inside?
  • Does a larger pumpkin always have more seeds?

Write down everyoneโ€™s guesses, then measure, test, open, and count to discover the answers.

If youโ€™re already planning to scoop out the pumpkin, save the seeds and roast them afterward for a National Pumpkin Day snack.

๐ŸŒŽ Adventure Trails

Every adventure has another path to follow. Choose a trail and see where your curiosity leads!

Culture Trail: More Than Pumpkin Pie

In the United States, pumpkins often make us think of pie and jack-oโ€™-lanterns, but around the world they appear in soups, curries, pasta fillings, side dishes, and more. Explore dishes like ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต kabocha no nimono from Japan, ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น tortelli di zucca from Italy, and ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡น soup joumou from Haiti to see how differently one familiar ingredient can be prepared.

Wonder Challenge:
Find Japan, Italy, and Haiti on a map. Then look up all three dishes. Which would you most like to taste?

Art Trail: Yayoi Kusamaโ€™s Pumpkins

Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama has returned to pumpkins again and again throughout her career. Her pumpkin paintings and sculptures often combine their naturally lumpy shapes with one of her artistic trademarks: repeating dots and patterns.

Science Trail: From Flower to Pumpkin

Before there can be a pumpkin, there must be a flowerโ€”and a little help from a pollinator. Pumpkin vines produce both male and female flowers, and bees carry pollen between them. Once a female flower is successfully pollinated, the tiny pumpkin beneath the flower can begin to grow.

Wonder Challenge:
If you have a pumpkin vine nearby, look closely at the flowers. Can you find one with a tiny pumpkin beneath it? If not, look up pictures of male and female pumpkin flowers and see if you can spot the difference.

One year, instead of carving pumpkins, we turned ours into giant eyeballs! ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ We used white pumpkins (you could also paint regular pumpkins white), then added a colorful iris and a big black pupil. They were ridiculously simple and turned out so cute… definitely one of my favorite pumpkin decorating ideas! ๐ŸŽƒ
