History Trail: Chess Travels the World

The game we know as chess has traveled a long way. An early form called chaturanga was played in ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ India before the game spread through ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ท Persia and along trade routes into other parts of Asia and Europe.

Wonder Challenge:
Find ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ India, ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ท Iran, and ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท France on a map. How far did chess travel before the International Chess Federation was founded in Paris?

Language Trail: From Shah to Checkmate

Even chess words have traveled across languages. The word check can be traced back through several languages to the Persian word shah, meaning โ€œking,โ€ and checkmate followed its own long journey into English.

Wonder Challenge:
Look up the words chess, check, and checkmate. Which word has the most surprising history?

Math Trail: The Knightโ€™s Challenge

A knight always moves in an L-shape: two squares in one direction and one square to the side. Mathematicians can turn that unusual move into puzzles about patterns, routes, and the shortest way to travel across a board.

Wonder Challenge:
Put a knight in one corner of a chessboard. What is the fewest number of moves you think it would take to reach the opposite corner?
