✨ 10 Playful Writing Prompts to Pair with August National Days
Celebrate August with creative writing, wonderful books, family activities, and curiosity-filled adventures that make learning feel like play.
Happy August! 🍎
August always feels a little bittersweet around our house.
This year I’m getting ready for one last first day of school with my oldest as he begins his senior year, while another child is starting high school and my youngest is still enjoying the wonder of elementary school. Every new season reminds me just how quickly these years pass.
As I organize curriculum and stack books on the kitchen table, I’m also looking forward to teaching one of my favorite middle school literature classes again. We’ll be reading classics like The Magician’s Nephew… one of those stories that never seems to lose its magic, no matter how many times I read it. Although we’ll eventually write a persuasive essay inspired by the novel, I never want the writing assignment to overshadow the joy of the story itself. We spend our time wondering, discussing, laughing, and making connections along the way. Then, when we turn the final page, we share a treat inspired by the story. For The Magician’s Nephew, that means apple pie, a tradition I know the class is already looking forward to!
That’s one of the reasons I love creating these National Day Learning Adventures. I’m slowly building a library with a new adventure for every day of the year, so no matter the day or season, families always have a reason to read, write, play, and explore together.
Chocolate chip cookies and buttermilk waffles are always favorites around our house, so those celebrations are definitely at the top of my August list. If I had to choose just one favorite, though, it would have to be World Elephant Day. I’ve been fascinated by elephants for as long as I can remember, and I have a feeling that adventure will be hard to resist. The funny thing is, my kids probably won’t even realize they’re practicing five senses writing, using stronger adjectives, writing persuasively, or experimenting with alliteration along the way. We’ll start by celebrating waffles, but who knows where our curiosity will take us? Maybe we’ll end up learning about Belgium, discovering how inventors earn patents, or wandering down an Adventure Trail we never expected. That’s the beauty of learning together… it doesn’t have to stay on the page where it began.
And if August gets busy (and it usually does!), don’t worry if you miss a celebration on its official day. These Learning Adventures were never meant to be checked off a calendar. They’re little invitations to pause, read together, write something imaginative, try a family activity, and follow your curiosity whenever your family has the time.
Whether you celebrate on the calendar day, save an adventure for a rainy afternoon, or bookmark a favorite for later in the year, I hope you’ll find a reason to celebrate a little every day this August. And I’d love for you to join the conversation! Just scroll to the bottom of any National Day Learning Adventure and look for the “Share Your Spark!” section. Tell us your family’s secret for the best chocolate chip cookies, the book you think every child should read, or the story behind your favorite photograph. Every family has stories worth sharing, and I can’t wait to hear about yours!
Keep exploring!
