❀️ Why We Celebrate

National Kite Flying Day is a chance to head outside, catch a breeze, and send something soaring. But kites are much more than colorful toys. For centuries, people have flown them for celebration, science, communication, and experimentation with flight.

πŸ’‘ Did You Know?

✈️ Before the first successful airplane, the Wright brothers experimented with kites to test ideas about controlling flight.

Write

✏️
The string pulls tight, the wind catches you, and suddenly you're climbing higher and higher.

Write from the point of view of a kite soaring high above an interesting place.

You might be flying over the ocean, a farm, an amusement park, a city, or somewhere else entirely. Describe what you see below, what the wind feels like, and what happens as your ride through the sky.

Need a Little Inspiration?

What would look different from high above the ground? Over the ocean, you might spot waves, boats, or seabirds. Over a farm, you might see fields, animals, and winding fences. Over an amusement park, you might drift above roller coasters, bright tents, and crowds below. Since you are the kite, let your narrator have a personality. Are you brave, nervous, curious, or thrilled to be soaring so high?

Go Fly a Kite!

If the weather cooperates, grab a kite and head to an open space for a family kite-flying break.

Before you launch, make predictions. Will the kite climb easily? What happens when the wind changes? Does running help? Once it’s flying, let everyone take a turn holding the line and noticing how the pull changes as the kite rises and dips.

No kite weather? Make the 3-D Flying Kite Craft from Arty Crafty Kids instead.

Culture Trail: Kites in China

Kites have a history stretching back more than 2,000 years, with some of the earliest known kites developed in China. Traditional makers eventually used lightweight materials such as bamboo, silk, and paper, creating kites in elaborate shapes and designs. Explore the Smithsonian’s historic Chinese kite collection.

Wonder Challenge:
Look closely at several historic Chinese kites. What shapes, animals, colors, or details do you notice that you wouldn’t expect to see on a kite?

History Trail: Kites Before Airplanes

Long before airplanes filled the sky, inventors used kites to experiment with flight. In 1899, the Wright brothers built a kite to test ideas about controlling an aircraft by twisting, or warping, its wings. Explore the story of flight at the Smithsonian.

Wonder Challenge:
Why might testing an idea with a kite have been safer and easier than immediately building a full-size airplane?

Science Trail: How Does a Kite Fly?

A kite may look as though the wind simply carries it upward, but several forces are working together. Lift, weight, drag, and tension all affect how a kite moves and whether it stays in the sky. Explore NASA’s guide to kite aerodynamics.

Wonder Challenge:
Look at NASA’s kite diagram and find the direction of lift and drag. What do you predict would happen if the wind suddenly became much stronger?
