Geography Trail: The Rainiest Places

Some places receive astonishing amounts of rain. Mawsynram, ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ India, is often cited among the wettest places on Earth, while parts of ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Hawaii are also famous for extremely high rainfall.

Wonder Challenge:
Find Mawsynram and Hawaii on a map. What features of these places might help explain why they receive so much rain?

Science Trail: How Big Is a Raindrop?

Raindrops are not really shaped like teardrops. Small drops are nearly round, while larger ones flatten underneath as they fall and may eventually break apart.

Wonder Challenge:
Look up a slow-motion image or diagram of falling raindrops. Which shape surprises you most?

Light Trail: After the Rain

A rainbow can appear when sunlight enters water droplets, bends, reflects inside, and separates into different colors. That is why rain and sunshine sometimes create such a spectacular combination.

Wonder Challenge:
The next time you see a rainbow, notice where the Sun is. Is it in front of you or behind you?
