World Photography Day celebrates the invention of photography and the incredible ways cameras help us capture memories, explore the world, and even make scientific discoveries. Whether you're photographing a family adventure, a tiny insect, or a beautiful sunset, every picture tells a story.
A camera doesn't actually "see". It captures light bouncing off objects to create a photograph! The word photography literally means "drawing with light," from the Greek words photos (light) and graphein (to draw).

Long before digital cameras, Wilson “Snowflake” Bentley used photography to reveal the hidden beauty of snowflakes through a microscope. His careful observations helped scientists better understand that no two snowflakes are exactly alike, proving that photography can be a powerful tool for discovery as well as art.
Photographers and scientists both learn by observing carefully. Does the surface have tiny lines or bumps? Are there reflections, or unexpected colors? Use vivid words to help your reader see your photograph through your eyes.
Challenge your family to see the world a little differently with a disposable camera! Since you only have 27 photos, every click counts. Before pressing the shutter, pause and think: Is this a moment worth remembering?
Once you’ve used all 27 exposures, have the film developed and enjoy the surprise of seeing your photos together. Which pictures turned out just as you imagined? Which unexpected moments became your favorites?

One of our family's favorite photos was taken at the Virginia Aquarium. The photographer told us to make terrified faces because a shark was swimming behind us, but the camera captured a sweet sea turtle instead! π It still makes us laugh every time we see it.
