The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig

by Eugene Trivizas

This wonderfully upside-down tale takes a story children already know and changes one very important thing: the characters’ familiar roles.

Read it before today’s writing challenge and notice what still reminds you of The Three Little Pigs. Then look for the choices that send this version in a completely different direction.

Write

✏️
Choose a fairy tale you know well. Now rewrite it, but change ONE major element...

the setting, the villain, or the ending.

Keep enough of the original story that your reader can recognize it, then see how your one big change sends the tale somewhere new.

Need a Little Inspiration?

What if Cinderella’s ball took place on a spaceship? What if the Big Bad Wolf wasn’t actually the villain? What if Jack reached the top of the beanstalk and discovered something completely different from a giant?

Choose one change and let the rest of the story grow from there.

Tell It Your Way

Choose a fairy tale everyone knows and try telling it aloud from memory.

Don’t worry about getting every word right. Give characters different voices, use gestures, invite listeners to join in on repeated phrases, and let the storyteller add a few details of their own.

When you’re finished, compare versions. Did everyone remember the story exactly the same way?

Every adventure has another path to follow. Choose a trail and see where your curiosity leads!

Literature Trail: Fairy Tale or Legend?

Fairy tales usually take place in an imaginary world and often include magic, enchanted objects, talking animals, or impossible events. Legends are also traditional stories, but they are usually connected to a real person, place, or event, even when the story has grown more dramatic over time.
Wonder Challenge: Imagine someone told you Cinderella and Robin Hood were both true stories. Which details would make you suspicious? Which parts sound as though they could have happened?

History Trail: The Golden Goose

πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm gathered stories that were already being told and shaped them into collections that helped preserve many traditional tales. One of the less familiar stories connected with their collection is The Golden Goose, where a youngest son’s kindness to a mysterious little gray man sends the entire tale in an unexpected direction.

Wonder Challenge:
Read the beginning of The Golden Goose. Compare the way the three brothers respond when the little gray man asks for food. What single choice sets the youngest brother’s adventure on a different path?

Literature Trail: Meet Hans Christian Andersen

Hans Christian Andersen was a Danish author who wrote fairy tales from his own imagination. His stories include The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling, The Princess and the Pea, and many others that are still read around the world today.

Wonder Challenge:
Find πŸ‡©πŸ‡° Denmark on a map, then look at a list of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales. How many titles do you recognize? Which unfamiliar one would you most like to hear?
