5 Simple Steps to Create a Simile Monster Poem (and See It with Canva AI!)
Similes help us compare one thing to another in a fun and vivid way — using the words like or as. Instead of saying, “It had big eyes,” a simile might say, “Its eyes were as big as dinner plates.” Suddenly, our monster isn’t just a creature — it’s a character that comes alive on the page.
This playful “simile monster” activity takes similes a step further: students use them to write a silly monster poem — and then watch their creature appear, thanks to a little help from Canva’s AI image tool. It’s a blend of creative writing, poetry, and digital storytelling that’s perfect for classrooms or homeschool.

🧠 What You’ll Need
- Our free printable Simile Monster packet (linked below)
- Imagination + giggles
- Optional: Access to Canva or another AI image generator
📝 Step 1: Learn What a Simile Is
A simile is a comparison that uses like or as — and it makes writing more descriptive and fun. Here are a few examples:
- Her voice was as loud as a trumpet
- He moved like a rocket on roller skates
- The icing was pink like cotton candy
We’ve included a simile brainstorming menu in the printable to help get ideas flowing.

✍️ Step 2: Fill In the Poem
After writing and testing several Simile Monster poems as image prompts, we found this one gives the most delightful results — both in student creativity and AI-generated images. Of course, you’re welcome to make up your own!
Here’s the version we’re using in this lesson:
My Simile Monster
With eyes as ______ as __________
Its fur/hair/skin is ______ like __________
With __________ like __________
Its color is as ________ as __________
It lives in a place that is as _________ as __________It may look wild and love to roam,
But really it just wants a home!
A note about Line 2:
Your child should choose one — fur, hair, or skin — depending on what kind of monster they imagine.
Think:
- Its fur is soft like clouds
- Its hair is curly like spaghetti
- Its skin is rough like a cactus
That third line is open-ended on purpose, too! Students can get as cute or silly as they like:
- ears like pancakes
- spots like chocolate chips
- horns like lightning bolts
Let them run wild with their descriptions — there’s no wrong way to imagine a Simile Monster!
🎨 Step 3: Generate an Image Using Canva AI
This part adds magic — kids see their simile monster!
Here’s how to do it:
- Open Canva and click “Canva AI” in the sidebar.
- Click the “Create an image” bubble in the bottom toolbar. (We recommend leaving the Style drop down empty and choosing the 16:9 ratio but you can play around with these settings if you like.)
- In the prompt box, type:
Create a cute monster character that goes with this poem:
[Paste your child's completed poem]

- Want a different style? Try:
- “Create a cute character” (less monstrous)
- “Create a cute creature” (more animal inspired)
- “This creature lives in a whimsical setting with candy trees and bubble clouds.” (customizing environment further)
- Click Submit — and see the monster come to life!
⚠️ A Quick Note for Parents
This is a creative and imaginative activity — and while we encourage kids to get wild with their ideas, we’ve designed it with a silly and sweet tone in mind. Some children may lean into scarier imagery, especially when using AI art tools.
To keep this a fun and age-appropriate project, we recommend:
- Reviewing your child’s poem before generating the image
- Using the prompt “cute monster character” in Canva to help guide results
- Adjusting the wording if needed to produce gentler or more whimsical creatures
🧡 Think: cotton-candy fur, spaghetti hair, pancake ears — not blood or fangs.
Parental guidance makes all the difference in shaping a playful learning experience!
💡 Step 4: Optional — Draw by Hand!
If you prefer a screen-free option, the packet includes a drawing page where students can sketch their Simile Monster using their poem as a guide.

Can you write a story about it?
Ask your child:
- Where does your monster live?
- What does it eat for breakfast?

- What does it do for fun?
📚 This could be a silly short story, a comic strip, or even a bedtime tale!
